Building Calm, Connected and Ready Learners

At Bundamba State School, we believe that students learn best when they feel safe, connected and emotionally ready to learn. Developing these skills is just as important as teaching reading, writing and mathematics because students who understand themselves and can regulate their emotions are better equipped to engage positively with learning, build strong relationships and navigate life's challenges.

That is why every student at Bundamba State School participates in Reboot.

Reboot is a whole-school approach that explicitly teaches students how their brains and bodies respond to everyday experiences and provides practical strategies to help them recognise, regulate and respond to their emotions. Rather than expecting students to instinctively know how to manage frustration, anxiety, excitement or disappointment, Reboot gives them a common language and practical tools that they can use every day.

Across the school, students learn about concepts such as the Three Brains, helping them understand how emotions influence thinking and decision-making, and the Five Faces, which support students to identify and communicate how they are feeling. Students also explore the Positive Change Highway, learning that mistakes and challenges are valuable opportunities for growth and that every day is a chance to reset, learn and improve.

Importantly, Reboot is not simply a wellbeing lesson taught once a week. It is embedded throughout our school culture. Students regularly revisit the concepts during classroom discussions, problem-solving conversations and learning experiences. Staff use the same language and strategies across classrooms and playgrounds, creating consistency and helping students apply their learning in authentic situations.

The impact has been significant.

Students are increasingly able to recognise their own emotions before they escalate, identify what they need to become calm and ready to learn, and independently select strategies that work for them. They are developing the confidence to communicate how they are feeling, seek support when required and return to learning more quickly after experiencing setbacks.

Reboot has also strengthened students' ability to co-regulate. Our students are learning to recognise when their peers may need support, respond with empathy and use respectful language to help one another solve problems and re-engage with learning. These skills are building stronger relationships across classrooms and contributing to a more positive and inclusive school culture.

For our staff, Reboot provides a shared framework for understanding behaviour through a developmental and relational lens. Instead of focusing solely on the behaviour that is visible, teachers work alongside students to understand what they may be experiencing, teach replacement skills and support them to return successfully to learning. This consistent approach strengthens relationships between students and staff and creates classrooms where students feel known, valued and supported.

The benefits extend directly into learning. As students become more skilled at recognising and managing their emotions, they are spending more time engaged in classroom learning. They are demonstrating greater persistence when faced with challenges, collaborating more effectively with their peers and recovering more quickly when things do not go to plan. This means more time learning, stronger engagement and increased opportunities for every student to achieve success.

Reboot aligns closely with our commitment to fostering a strong sense of belonging and engagement at Bundamba State School. By explicitly teaching emotional regulation, resilience and positive relationships, we are equipping students with lifelong skills that will support them not only throughout their schooling but well beyond the classroom.

Through Reboot, we are developing learners who are calm, connected, resilient and ready to thrive.
